Important Life Lessons
2. Notice the good. We each carry an evolutionary predisposition to dwell on what's wrong in our lives. The antidote is to deliberately take time out each day to notice what's going right, and to feel grateful for what you've got. It's probably a lot.
3. Let go of certainty. The opposite isn't uncertainty. It's openness, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox, rather than choose up sides. The ultimate challenge is to accept ourselves exactly as we are, but never stop trying to learn and grow.
4. Never seek your value at the expense of someone else's. When we're feeling devalued, our reactive instinct is to do anything to restore what we've lost. Devaluing the person who made you feel bad will only prompt more of the same in return.
5. Do the most important thing first in the morning and you'll never have an unproductive day. Most of us have the highest energy early in the day, and the fewest distractions. By focusing for a designated period of time, without interruption, on the highest value task for no more than 90 minutes, it's possible to get an extraordinary amount of work accomplished in a short time.
6. It's possible to be excellent at anything, but nothing valuable comes easy and discomfort is part of growth. Getting better at something depends far less on inborn talent than it does the willingness to practice the activity over and over, and to seek out regular feedback, the more precise the better.
7. The more behaviors you intentionally make automatic in your life, the more you'll get done. If you have to think about doing something each time you do it, you probably won't do it for very long. The trick is to get more things done using less energy and conscious self-control. How often do you forget to brush your teeth?
8. Slow down. Speed is the enemy of nearly everything in life that really matters. It's addictive and it undermines quality, compassion, depth, creativity, appreciation and real relationship.
9. The feeling of having enough is magical. It rarely depends on how much you've got. More is rarely better. Too much of anything eventually becomes toxic.
10. Do the right thing because it's the right thing to do, and don't expect anything in return. Your values are one of the only possessions you have that no one can take away from you. Doing the right thing may not always get you what you think you want in the moment, but it will almost always leave you feeling better about yourself in the long run. When in doubt, default to calm and kind.
11. Add more value in the world than you're using up. We spend down the earth's resources every day. Life's primary challenge is to put more back into the world than we take out.
12. Savor every moment — even the difficult ones. It all goes so fast.

Here's to Health & Fitness in 2012
I am committed to focusing on health and fitness in 2012 and came across this excellent article:
Burning off that unwanted fat does not need to be a dreadful, life altering endeavor! All you need is a little knowledge, a good plan and great support! How about 12 easy to follow tips to get you going today? And, hey, you don’t need to try to implement all of them at once! Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint! You didn’t gain those unwanted pounds overnight, don’t plan on dropping them by tomorrow! Dedicated persistence is what we are after! Now get to it…
Tip #1: Increase Your Muscle — Muscles are fat-burning furnaces, so be sure to do enough resistance training to build and maintain lean muscle while following your training with a healthy meal or snack that contains protein, carbohydrates and fat. Building new muscle raises your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) so you’ll burn more calories every day.
Tip #2: Do The Cardio Deed — Cardio improves definition and burns the fat that covers your muscles, especially belly fat. Combining regular aerobic exercise with strength training will give you the slimming effect you’ve been going for, not to mention what it will do for our heart. After all, toning without cardio is like building a house on a weak foundation.
Tip #3: Never Miss a Meal — Eat 5-6 small meals and/or snacks each day to avoid blood-sugar spikes and minimize urges to binge. Try to schedule meals at the same time each day. If you feed yourself well throughout the day, you’ll learn to understand when your body truly needs food. You can’t starve yourself and expect to make good choices at the next meal.
Tip #4: Choose Wisely — Fuel your body with wholesome, nutritious foods, and limit your intake of refined carbs (anything sugary or white-flour based). To maximize the calories burned through digestion and stave off hunger, get plenty of complex carbs (fruits, vegetables and beans) and eat a little protein with every meal. It doesn’t need to be meat; nuts, low-fat dairy, tofu, and beans are all good vegetarian protein sources.
Tip #5: Sleep Tight — Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. A recent study from Case Western Reserve University found that, on average, women who sleep for 5 hours or less per night are 32 percent more likely to gain weight and 15 percent more likely to be obese than those who get at least 7 hours.
Tip #6: Water, Water, Water — In a German study, subjects who drank 16 ounces of water at a time experienced a 30 percent increase in metabolic rate during the following hour, burning an extra 24 calories. The researchers recommend cool water because the body expends extra calories warming it up to your body temperature.
Tip #7: Focus On Your Assets — Playing up your favorite body parts can boost your confidence and draw attention away from spots you want to minimize. Sculpting your shoulders, arms, chest, and back, for example, can help balance heavier hips so you look more proportionate. Plus, you’ll be firmer all over.
Tip #8: Get Your Fill — Undereating causes your metabolic rate to drop and your body to hold onto fat. Be very careful, women especially, have a tendency to eat too little once they make the decision to “drop a few pounds”! The last thing you want to do is slow your metabolism even more simply due to eating too little, but obviously, the quality of the calories and the individual needs are very important.
Tip #9: Only Worry About That Which You Can Control — Keep stress levels in check by managing your time, focusing on the present and not over-committing. Many studies have found a link between high levels of stress and weight gain. You don’t have to commit to regular yoga classes or meditation sessions, just find something you enjoy that allows you to bring it down a notch whenever necessary.
Tip #10: Intervals — Alternate the speed and intensity of any cardio workout routines to stoke your fat burners. For instance, if you’re walking, do a few minutes at a moderate pace, then speed-walk or jog for a few minutes; repeat. If you’re running, go for a few minutes, then sprint for a minute and repeat.
Tip #11: Fill In Your Gaps – Like it or not, you have gaps in your nutrition, no matter how well you eat. Something as simple as adding MNS Max 3 for a comprehensive vitamin, mineral and weight management solution makes a world of difference! Adding Spark to your daily grind will kill cravings for sweets and provide lasting natural energy through the brain food commonly missing in the daily diet! Not only are these things essential for looking, feeling and performing better, but they will save you a ton of money too…GUARANTEED.
Tip #12: Have a Purpose – As silly as you make this sounds, I cannot emphasize this enough! Far too few people truly understand the power of the mind, the effect it has on reaching ones goals, irrelevant of what they may be, but it does work wonders. Wanting to lose a few pounds or simply burn some body fat, simply will not cut it for most people when it comes to really attacking your goals. You need a bit more detail, a bit more focus, and a stronger overall purpose, in order to achieve long-term success. Short-term motivation can be generated easily, but to create a life-change, you need to know your “why”! Will the burning of unwanted body fat get you off some medications? Will it help you enjoy your family and friends more? Maybe set a better example for your kids? Do you see the difference in having a true purpose to work for and simply running with the masses and complaining about carrying a few extra pounds? I hope so, because it really makes a difference!

Day 10 - Saturday - October 1, 2011
The Journey Ends
Seriously why can't I sleep in on days like these? I woke up around 4:30 eastern and it's likely I will be up late tonight. Pam and I made our final preparations to leave the ship this rainy morning. We had the best weather, sunny skies and temperatures in the high 70s. We ate breakfast pretty much in the same spot we ate lunch a week ago.. Full circle, just like the circle of life... Btw that comes out on Tuesday. We left the ship and arrived at Logan Airport in Boston where Pam was able to procure another license plate photo for her collection. Going through security we had to hold our hands up for 10 seconds. I could swear they had me hold mine up for 20 seconds... figures.
Day 9 - Friday - September 30, 2011
Today was a lazy day as Pam and I watched a movie before lunch. For lunch we forewent the dining room and went to the Windjammer for ribs and ecotes, yum! I entered the table tennis tournament but unfortunately lost in the first round. Not to make excuses because honestly while we all know I'm competitive, I enjoy the playing just as much. The guy running the tournament did not know how to run these things as I was paired against a strong player. That's okay but as we started our volley to determine initial serve... After one hit serve was determined, huh? Okay fine we began playing... My opponent served illegally by palming the ball. I let it go as well as the two bad calls by the official as I felt I would still win and didn't want to make an issue. Then when I was behind 14-13 the official calls game point. Hello? When did ping-pong games only have15 points? Well I lost as my opponent palmed his serve. So I failed to bring home the gold this cruise, nor the silver nor even the bronze. Pam's wail of sadness was echoed by the non-existent dolphins that failed to appear that day.
Tonight it was all about tipping the staff and we did so willingly as we thoroughly enjoyed our waiters and housekeeping staff. This was also our last dinner with our lifelong friends from Connecticut and Georgia. We swore oaths to remain friends forever and to always keep in touch. However when we offered our contact info they mysteriously said they'd get it later... Yet as I finished my sixth strawberry ice cream (note in total, not tonight), our friends had disappeared and only my lovely wife remained. Our last show was fine and afterwards we had a chance to speak with the "Two Funny Guys", they were even funny in person. They usually play at the Venetian or Hard Rock in Vegas.
